MoreStocks Review – webOSroundup

trial_2009-15-12_161607Business users are one of the major targets of the Pre (and to a lesser extent the Pixi). As such, it is imperative that webOS has apps that cater to them. And what do a lot of businessmen and women do? They pay attention to the stock markets. So how do we cater to them? MoreStocks by More Solutions (available on the App Catalog for $4.99)!

When it comes to stocks and other financial vehicles, there is no such thing as too much information. The more involved you are, the more information you want. If you boil it all down, MoreStocks is simply a tool to get that information in an easy to digest format.

Starting out you have to create a profile…email and phone number is all they need. Why do they need this? So that all your information can be stored in the cloud. This means that if your Pre explodes, you can get another one and you haven’t lost a thing. This may sound like a luxury (and for most apps it probably is), but for an app like this, it is essential.

Once you have your profile setup, you can start looking at the markets. Add your favorite stocks or indexes by name, symbol, or if it is a popular stock (like McDonalds) you can choose it from a list. Once you have the stock or index loaded it goes into your list. This list can be sorted manually, or you can choose some standards like alphabetical or even cooler, by their daily performance.

Now here comes the sizzle (yes, even financial apps can have a little sizzle). If you click on a single stock/index the app will quickly download the latest news about it including recent news items, its daily range, volume of sales, and even transactions happening after hours. You can also track its performance with some simple, but very nice, graphs. You can see how it has done in a single day, week, month, and so on up to ten years. Another nice touch is if you double click on a graph you can turn your phone in landscape mode and see it full screen.

trial_2009-15-12_164750If you are an active trader, you can enter in your transactions and it will total up your profits and losses. If you are really serious, you can set the app to update automatically. This will show you how the markets are looking everywhere from 2 minutes (kiss that battery goodbye) to once an hour.

There is also a news feed. Get the top financial news, or specific news about bonds, commodities, etc. What was impressive here was that the news items loaded very quickly. This is probably the result of the fact that they only load a small blurb for each story. If you want to read the whole story, then it will kick you over to the source material on the web. Since you probably don’t care to read 90% of the stories it loads, I find this to be a nice trade off.

The one issue I ran into was with their last feature: Price alerts. The point of this feature is to let you know that a stock/index has hit a certain number. When one goes off you will get a text message, a phone call, or both. Most of the time I didn’t have a problem setting them up, but if I tried to create an alert for the Dow Jones Index the app said “Saving” for several minutes until I finally backed out of it. Not sure what happened there, but the problem seems consistant. Obviously this is a key feature so hopefully the Dow issue will get fixed quickly.

As for enhancements, I found myself wishing there was an easy way to do some quick research about a stock without actually adding it to my list to track. For instance, if I were deciding to buy a certain stock, the cool graphs would be a great tool. I would like to have been able to just search and go straight to the stock page with all the news and graphs right there. If I decided I liked the stock, then I could add it to my list with a single tap, otherwise it goes away.

Pros

  • A torrent of features
  • The graphs for the various stocks/indexes are particularly impressive
  • Easy to use, well designed
  • Quick news loads
Cons

  • Ran into an issue when creating price alerts.
  • Tough to do research on a stock without cluttering up your list
Bottom Line

Simply put, MoreStocks brings together tons of financial information quickly and puts it in front of you in a nice and intuitive package.

Personally, I find the stock market fascinating, but also a bit scary, so I have an advisor that takes care of my investments. If you are like me, then you probably don’t need a tool like this (a quick trip to Yahoo or the like should be just fine).

On the other hand, if you like to fiddle around with your positions from time to time, or just like to keep an close eye on what is happening with the markets, then this app is a no brainer.
