Today was a fun day on the review front. Why? Because I got to take a look at the new game Paratrooper by 185vfx (aka Rob Bredow). This game follows in the same vein as Topple Ball in that it is an accelerometer game (you tilt your phone to play it). Also like Topple Ball, it is insanely fun to play.
Paratrooper costs $1.99 on the Catalog and is even more proof that the people who say there are no good apps on webOS really have no idea what they are talking about.
The premise of the game is to guide your little troopers safely after being dropped from an airplane. The game starts off very simply, but soon the obsticles start adding up and it gets pretty darn tough (but still fun). What really stands out on the game is pure personality. The graphics, while simple, are just a joy to watch. The quotes that happen when you land on a tree, in the electric eel tank, or off the screen are pretty funny as well.
You get points for landing on the big X…the closer you are, the more points you will get. It sounds easier than it really is, but for those who stick with it are rewarded with being the top of the daily and all time leaderboards.
The only knock I can give this little gem is the lack of sound effects. I don’t need 7.1 THX or anything, but some plane sounds, some success/failure sounds would add a lot. For instance, the game is just begging for a “squish” sound.
- Fun concept and great personality
- Leaderboards
- Just the right amount of challenge
- More levels would be nice
- No sounds
Paratroopers is simply fun. It looks great, it plays great, and it is a perfect example of what a phone game should be. I, for one, will be bringing those troopers home!

So I downloaded the game and it’s fun, but I don’t understand what I need to do to beat or match the top scores. On round one, the top scores are 900, but you only get 100 pts for a perfect landing and you only get 5 tries. I landed five guys perfectly for a max score of 500.
I am no master at the game by any stretch, but I do know that if you land multiple guys at the same time you can get bonus points. That is how you get higher than 500.
