Wednesday News Roundup – webOS 1.2 Finally

newspaper_closeup_eclaireThe biggest news of the past seven days is certainly the release of webOS 1.2.0.  Although we already covered this release when it came out we’ll try to cover some other aspects of it.  The other big news we’ll cover is the tumbling price of the Palm Pre.  Finally, we’ll wrap up the tidbits in the Roundup section below.

webOS 1.2 Odds and Ends

Everyone’s talking about webOS 1.2.0 this week.  For most people, things went off without a hitch.  We’re all excited about the snappier user experience and the refinements to existing apps.  We’re learning about cut and paste.  Although, not everyone has had a smooth upgrade so far.

It has been reported that some users are seeing some problems with Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) servers.  According to this article at PreCentral the problem occurs with hosted Exchange accounts at servers such as 1and1, 4smartphone and mail2web.  This thread at the PreCentral forum has been tracking other upgrade issues users have run in to, including complete resets of the Pre phone’s data, which was compounded by Palm’s backup server going offline under the load.  Fortunately, it doesn’t seem any of the issues were beyond recovery with Palm’s webOS Doctor.

One of the benefits of the update to webOS 1.2 has been the increased functionality of the updated Mojo SDK.  According to the documentation, the SDK includes the ability for app authors to upload and download files, which means, for example, Twitter clients will be able to upload images without sending through e-mail.  Another beneficiary of the update is Classic by MotionApps.  According to their blog the new OS enabled HotSync from their PalmOS emulator.

Pre Pricing

The last week saw quite a lot of fluctuation in the pricing of the Palm Pre, with the price hitting free with one offer.  Currently, the lowest price appears to be $99 after mail-in rebate for new contracts via WalMart’s Let’s Talk page and Amazon.com.  Some analysts are wondering about the price cuts.  Our take is that a number of factors are in play with the pricing.  For one, Sprint needs to bulk up its customer base so is inclined to make deals to get new contracts.  Palm, too, wants to move more phones.  The early adopters have picked up their phones and now it’s time to reel in those sitting on the sidelines.  Certainly, it’s a great time to be making a switch to the Pre and it’s easy to find some good deals.

Roundup

You can read about the Palm’s app approval process kerfuffle, if you’re so inclined.  That post also mentions Palm’s new additions: Ben Galbraith and Dion Almaer, co-leads of developer relations.  There were also some rumors about Verizon skipping the Pre, though those rumors were put to rest.  As always, feel free to add your thoughts below.  We look forward to hearing from you.
