Wednesday News Roundup – Investor Call, webOS 1.2 (Again), iTunes and Apps

newspaper_closeup_eclaireThe last week has yielded up a few Palm Pre and Palm Pixi related tidbits.  Once again, we’ll put them on a plate and serve them with a parsley garnish, all for you.  Today we’ll cover Palm’s investor conference call, webOS 1.2 delay rumors, Palm’s plea to the USB Implementers Forum is rejected and Palm’s (app) cup runneth over.

Palm Holds Investor Conference Call

Last Thursday Palm held an investor conference call to announce their first quarter financial results for 2010.  These results are the first to include sales of Palm’s new Pre smartphone.  They announced revenues of $68 million.  One thing notably absent from the call was the number of Palm Pre’s sold.  The picture of Palm’s actual numbers is obscured by some GAAP and non-GAAP issues, though word came down Palm (and other smartphone manufacturers) will be able to realize revenues at time of sale.  Further, Palm is officially abandoning Windows Mobile and will issue 16 million shares of common stock (of which Elevation Partners will purchase $35 million worth).  Today, Palm announced that the shares will be sold for $16.25 per share.

webOS 1.2 Delayed

According to our good friends at PreCentral, webOS 1.2 will be delayed.  This new version of the OS was supposed to make its appearance prior to the opening of the App Catalog for paid apps.  The rumors seem to indicate that we will not see paid apps appearing with tomorrow’s update.  We sincerely hope that’s not the case but also would rather the opening go off without a hitch.  Fortunately, there will be many new apps to see, according the story below.

usb_125USB Implementers Forum Reject’s Palm’s Plea

For those that have followed the saga surrounding Palm’s iTunes syncing we have another new twist.  Palm had previously filed an objection with the USB IF saying that Apple’s use of the USB ID to disable Palm’s access to iTunes was in violation of USB IF rules.  They further stated that they were going to spoof Apple’s unique ID to fool iTunes into connecting with the Pre (and Pixi).  Today, the group indicated that they found nothing wrong with Apple’s actions and indicated they were concerned about Palm’s circumvention plan and asked for clarification within seven days.  Regardless of the outcome this will certainly continue to be an interesting story to follow.  Apple most recently disabled iTunes sync with iTunes 9.0 and rumors indicate that webOS 1.2 will restore that syncing capability.  You can catch up on the whole story at PreCentral.

Palm Inundated With App Submissions

According to Chuq Von Rospach, Palm’s Developer Community Manager, “We got more applications than we could handle well, which is a good problem to have.”  With the impending release of paid apps to the App Catalog Palm is struggling to keep up with the flood of new apps.  Fortunately, Palm is bringing on more personnel to handle the apps and to work more closely with developers to get their apps into the store.  This is welcome news to everyone.

Roundup

And now the garnish:  Palm continues its push to market the Pre and its younger sibling the Pixi.  Palm recently showed off their devices to the stars of the 61st Emmy Awards.  Also, Palm lawyers went after retailers in the UK offering unlocked Pre’s for pre-order.  As always, sound off in the comments below or take a look at our Twitter feed.  Until next week…

Update 1: Fixed typo, added note about missing Palm Pre sales figures and added a missing link.
