Wednesday News Roundup, September 2, 2009

newspaper_closeup_eclaireAugust has drawn to a close and September has started.  As we mentioned last week, the Pre is loose in Canada now.  This week there were some interesting rumors about new Palm models showing up in Sprint and Verizon databases, Mitch Allen will be giving a webOS webcast and Palm has a patent on location-aware advertising.  See below for more information.

Tantalizing Hints of New Palm Devices

In the last week we saw hints of Palm devices showing up in Verizon’s and Sprint’s databases.  The early thought was that the two phones in Verizon’s databases were the Eos and the Palm Pre.  However, the presence of the P40 model in Sprint’s database has many wondering if that might not be the Eos and the P120/P121 might be two models of the Pre.  We’ll have to wait to see!

Palm Patent May Reveal Why Palm Tracks You

The Boy Genius Report tips us to Palm’s recent patent on location-aware advertising.  The patent appears to cover providing advertising that is target to your current location or, based upon your appointments and other data, the locations you may be near.  People are talking about what the implications of all this are as it relates to the story last week about Palm’s data gathering.

Mitch Allen To Give webOS Programming Webcast

Mitch Allen, Palm VP and Software CTO, will be holding another webOS webcast.  Hit the link for a free sign-up.  This talk is a companion to his book on webOS programming:

This session begins with an overview of the basic webOS application structure and a demo of the core SDK developer tools, and includes detail presentations on the application launch lifecycle, and Mojo controllers and methods. We’ll create the initial version of News application with a single story view which will use many of the elements described in this segment including appinfo.json, sources.json, basic scene styles, stage and scene controllers, pushScene and swapScene methods among others.

Wrap-Up

Also of note this week is a new release of the on-screen keyboard you may have heard about, this time in a format most people should be able to install.  Also, China Telecom is in talks with Palm to bring the Palm Pre to China.  If you’ve heard of something else, please let us know!
